Cell Phone Beginnings: History on Cell Phones.

It's almost impossible to imagine a world without cell phones. Wherever you go you're bound to see someone pull out their own device and start informing you, and everyone around you, about the latest drama in their life. But where did the cell phone that we know and love come from?

The dream of cell phones was conceived a long time before the technology was created to actually make the dream a reality. Early attempts were basically two way radio transceiver devices, for conversations between taxi cabs and police cruisers; little more than 'Walkie-Talkies'. It wasn't until two companies, Bell Labs and Motorola, decided to embark on a dramatic race to see who could be the first to create a true cell phone that any more progress was made.

In 1972 Martin Cooper from Motorola was able to make the first ever call from the first ever cell phone to his rival at Bell Labs to inform him of his success. From that day forward cell phone technology came on in leaps and bounds, with Bell Labs and AT&T both launching their own prototypes within the next couple of years. Chicago and Tokyo were the first places with cell phone coverage, though it was very limited and only available to a select few. For several years it was only big businesses and government officials that could be seen with the prestigious devices.

That all changed in the late eighties / early nineties when the technology suddenly caught on. In the US alone there were over one million cell phone users in the year 1987. Suddenly marketing campaigns were targeted at the average Joe rather than solely the businessman. Prices became much more affordable for those on more average incomes and the popularity grew exponentially.

Today the choices of cell phones and companies are astronomical. It seems that each week a new and improved model is released making all previous efforts redundant. The multi-billion dollar industry has targeted the younger generation of cell phone users to create a must-have culture for the latest accessory to go with their phone of choice.

From humble beginnings to one of the largest and most successful industries in the world; the cell phone has come a long way. Who'd have thought that the early invention from Martin Cooper would have such an impact on our lives today?
